February 2017: I began my adventure as a Temple Spa Lifestyle Consultant and, in the following months I have been exclusively using Temple Spa products on my skin. Actually, I have used all the products; yes, all of them, more than once.
I am not in the least ashamed of this decadence
There are one or two of them that have become staples for me (as you may have read) but by far, the ones I use regularly on my face are so magnificent I thought I would share my ‘indispens(p)ables’ with you. There is too much I want to say about each product for one blog post so this will also be the first ‘series’ I have produced. Enjoy!

IN THE BEGINNING
Deep Cleansing Melt
A hand-blended facial in a jar!
Clean, balanced skin is the Holy Grail of course and I like to be thorough so I have always been a wash-off cleanser kind of a gal until I tried IN THE BEGINNING. It is a balm rather than a lotion or foaming wash and it is the first of the products I am going to mention that are multi-purpose (one of the recurring themes I absolutely adore about the Temple Spa range); this one is a cleanser, an exfoliator and a mask.
When I first saw a pot of IN THE BEGINNING I was struck by how beautiful it looks and also how aptly-named, as if someone caught sunlight in a solid, crystal chalice; the gorgeous honey-gold colour almost seems to take on a vibrant glow but yet, remains so soothing.
All this before I have even opened the jar!
The way Temple Spa present their products is terribly gratifying. Their opulent, contemporary packaging with its nuances of retro Hollywood glamour is exquisite overall and IN THE BEGINNING does not disappoint; it even comes with its very own spatula (because we all know that dipping our mitts straight in to products is bad – right?) You really do not need to use very much at all because a little truly does go a long way, which is another favourite Temple Spa idiom of mine and based on solid fact because the longevity of their products makes them superbly cost-effective. I generally scoop a fat, pea-sized amount out of my little tub. If you are scooping out anything like the size of a sherbet lemon then stop it – your face is not that big.
When you untwist the black, bakelite-esque lid and open the gorgeous, frosted-glass container a sublime mingling of scents like lavender, clary and basil lets you know that morning has definitely arrived! To me, the aroma is reminiscent of Mediterranean citrus with notes of aniseed or liquorice (that will be probably be the linalool ingredient) and this entire redolence reminds me (and I do apologise to the Temple Spa blenders here) of the slightly less alluring Barratt’s Sherbet Fountain.
When I was a child, my Aunty Clara would visit every week and hand over our hugely-anticipated pocket money. I would scamper off to Mr. Edward’s shop and almost always selected a Barratt’s Sherbet Fountain. To the uninitiated, a Barratt’s Sherbet Fountain is a traditional and much-loved British candy described perfectly by VeganWiki, thus:
“consists of sherbet and a stick made from liquorice […] the top of the stick was intended to be bitten off to form a straw and the sherbet sucked through it, where it fizzes and dissolves on the tongue.”
To that end, the colours, the scent and the texture (to a point) of this sumptuous melt create an entire sense of nostalgia for me. I would defy anyone not to face their day with a broad smile after using IN THE BEGINNING first thing.
IN THE BEGINNING‘s texture is curiously not unlike that of a pear. Anyone who has wept buckets over City of Angels will recall Meg Ryan’s character, Maggie explaining how a pear tastes to Seth, played by Nicholas Cage:
Seth: What’s that like? What’s it taste like? Describe it like Hemingway.
Maggie: Well, it tastes like a pear. You don’t know what a pear tastes like?
Seth: I don’t know what a pear tastes like to you.
Maggie: Sweet, juicy, soft on your tongue, grainy like a sugary sand that dissolves in your mouth. How’s that?
Seth: It’s perfect.
That is also a pretty accurate analogy for IN THE BEGINNING; it certainly dissolves on your skin, it is indeed ‘perfect’ and it is definitely fit for an angel.
However, I am not sure about the taste; I have never tried ingesting any of my Temple Spa products but it is well-documented that I am often tempted because they just smell so delicious!
IN THE BEGINNING absolutely encourages me to take a few moments to turn my morning routine into a mini spa ritual as I massage it into my forehead, cheeks and chin using circular upward movements. This helps to dissolve IN THE BEGINNING into my skin, increasing its efficacy and allowing the tiny, natural beads it contains to gently work their exfoliation magic as they melt.
At this point, depending on how busy my day is and how much time I have, I opt to either take the remaining IN THE BEGINNING off my face with a warm flannel or I allow IN THE BEGINNING to sit for twenty minutes before I gently massage it once more, prior to removing it carefully with a warm flannel. The latter is my preference as it gives me few minutes of indulgent me time.
On the subject of indulgences, caffeine is one of my passions and I usually do not like anything to interfere with the aromatic experience of a good cup of fresh bean, but drinking my morning coffee while I let IN THE BEGINNING go to work on my skin is a winning combination. Maybe it is because I am currently obsessed with Los Andes Honey Espresso from Pact Coffee; it has some extremely citrus-sweet notes which certainly compliment IN THE BEGINNING (I really was not expecting that to be a thing).
Whether I have opted for the quick cleansing ritual or the full mask routine, when I have removed my IN THE BEGINNING I always splash fresh, cold water on to my face to stimulate my circulation. The results are always pleasing, whichever way I use IN THE BEGINNING and I love to see the way my face takes on a much more radiant glow.
IN THE BEGINNING is, as I always explain to my hosts and their guests at Spa to Go Experiences, my ‘go-to’ cleanser and I use it daily. It is more of a religion than a regime; you will testify to that when you try it too!
